Want to learn about nature while having fun? That is possible in many ways in Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide, for young and old alike!
For more than 25 years, the Libelhamelclub has been Kalmthout's nature club. Here, children aged 6 to 12 are trained to be 'mavericks'. Access Gate De Vroente is the club members' base of operations to Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide once a month. Being a 'maverick' is coveted here.
Those who still can't get enough of nature after the Libelhamelclub can join the Junior Ranger club of Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. From September to June, these enthusiastic youngsters (aged 12 to 17) go on a monthly outing in the Grenspark. Like real rangers, they go out with a forester, study typical plants, birds and other animals and roll up their sleeves for nature management.
The real young nature lovers will enjoy the Junior Ranger camp: the annual nature camp for youngsters between 12 and 17 years old. This summer camp logically revolves around nature and young people actually do their bit. Together with experienced guides, they remove bird cress and young pine trees, spot birds and identify dragonflies and other critters. There is plenty to investigate and do!

Do you enjoy going out in nature and would you like to learn something about the animals and plants that live there or about the area's rich cultural history? Then a guided excursion is for you. An experienced nature guide will take you on an 'Early Bird Walk', for example, when many visitors are still asleep and nature is just waking up. Look for mushrooms with an expert, hear interesting historical facts and learn to search for and interpret traces yourself.

The Forestry Commission's From Tree to Forest walk combines the natural and the digital world. Here, you follow the Mouse/Owl route. Along the way, you will come across posts with a QR code. Scan this code with your phone. A forest story or a video message from the forester will then appear automatically. At the starting point of the route at the car park on Abdijlaan the walk starts and you will find the first QR code. You can walk the route in one go or in stages. For example, you can stop halfway and pick up the walk again on your next visit. You can also come back with family, friends or your family. Behind almost all QR codes is a small and fun assignment for children (and adults). No extra material is needed for these assignments, you will find it in the forest.
