On Saturday 17 May, a successful edition of the Dig & Ride Event took place near the Volksabdij. The event was organised by the Grenspark Trail Builders in cooperation with Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide.
With this initiative, the organisers wanted to introduce interested parties to trail-building (building and maintaining mountain bike routes) in a low-threshold way, while at the same time recruiting new volunteers to continue sustainable management of the growing network of routes.
The day started on the grounds of Zuidwesthoek College, where participants were welcomed with coffee and cake. During a brief introduction, the organisers explained the importance of route maintenance, the role of volunteers in it and the use of the necessary tools. The group then set to work on a recently constructed section of the MTB route Volksabdij. Work was carried out at various locations, such as filling potholes, reinforcing bends and removing loose sand. In addition, trails were cleared.
After a productive morning, participants returned to the school for a sandwich lunch. In the afternoon, the programme ended with a joint mountain bike ride through the Grenspark.
Thanks go to the Grenspark Trail Builders for organising this inspiring day, and to all participants for their enthusiasm and active contribution. Several attendees expressed their desire to volunteer more often in the future.
