A new Master Plan for Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide (2024 - 2048)

In 2022-2023, Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide focused on shaping its future within the National Parks Flanders policy framework and in connection with the new National Parks Netherlands policy programme. These policy frameworks formed the basis of our Master Plan, which sets the course for Grenspark for the next 24 years.

The Master Plan, developed in cooperation with Bureau Omgeving, covers a broad spectrum of objectives, including nature conservation, landscape management, tourism, recreation, education and research. In the Master Plan, Grenspark, together with partners, put nature first and, as a derivative, worked out the other elements such as recreation. The plan also gives direction to a new governance, crucial for the sustainable future of Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. The Master Plan reflects a cross-border vision that takes into account policy frameworks on both sides of the border, and offers opportunities for expansion and ambitions in both Belgium and the Netherlands.

Due to lack of support from agriculture and private owners, the Special Commission decided on 17 May not to submit an application to the Flemish Government for the status of National Park Flanders. Nevertheless, the process has led to an enhanced interest in cooperation from local managers and surrounding municipalities. The Master Plan serves as a robust basis for future cooperation within the Grenspark, both internally and with new partners.

Operational Plan

The operational plan sets out the strategic and operational objectives on which Grenspark, together with its partners, is working for the next six years (2024 - 2030).
