Nolse Duinen restored, fens cleaned up

Between 2014-2020, various partners in the Grenspark made efforts to increase the natural values of the area. To strengthen nature, Natuurpunt, Agency for Nature and Forests and Vereniging Natuurmonumenten worked together. As a result, the Nolse Duinen were restored, fens such as Groote and Kleine Meer were cleaned up and the banks of the Stappersven were given a facelift. A wet connection between the Steertse Heide in Flanders and the Groote Meer in the Netherlands will allow species to move across the border again. A phosphate treatment plant was built to purify the water from the neighbouring agricultural enclave running towards the Groote Meer. For recreationists, a new footpath, an observation tower and a bird platform were built at the edge of the Stappersven.

The project was completed on 30 November 2020.

All residents of Essen, Kalmthout, Stabroek, Zandvliet, Berendrecht and Woensdrecht received a special newspaper in the bus at the end of the project in which the partners talk about the objectives and preliminary results.
