If you enjoy a tranquil walk through old oak lanes and woods, Wandelpad Eik comes highly recommended. The walk takes you along former peat ditches that reflect the traces of the rich peat history in the Grenspark. Between the mid-13th and 18th centuries, peat was mined on a large scale in the Noorderkempen. Peat is dried peat, which was extracted from the swampy peatlands and used as fuel. Via dug canals and moats, the peat blocks were transported to cities such as Roosendaal. Hiking path Eik shows you the traces of the peat canals and also introduces you to the Stappersven, one of the largest heathlands in Flanders. Take a look at the edge of the fen, which attracts many water birds. You then continue your tour through a wooded area to the end point.
