If you want to explore footpath Mont Noir (6 km), you should first do part of the walk Schaap of Ree. Indeed, Mont Noir is tucked deeper into the Grenspark on the formerly private Mont Noir estate.
Mont Noir refers to a piece of land traditionally known as Black Hill. In the 19th century, the Brussels industrialist Mignot bought a pavilion after a World Fair and had it transferred to his estate, which he christened 'Mont Noir'. At the same time, he had the heath cleared and had a park laid out with avenues, ponds, columns and statues. All that has since disappeared; only the columns remain. That the purple signposts depict three columns is therefore no coincidence and an appropriate reference to the estate of the time.
