In the autumn of 2024, the Forestry Commission will have a number of ditches in the Kortenhoeff nature reserve filled in or deepened. They will do this to ensure that less water flows out of the area, making the area wetter. These measures will better protect the habitat of special plants and animals. As a visitor, you may be inconvenienced by machines at work and paths that are temporarily closed.

Kortenhoeff is a beautiful nature reserve to the southwest of Huijbergen, with lots of different wildlife. You will find three fens, drifting dunes and both wet and dry heathland. Because of this diversity of nature types, many special species of flora and fauna also occur here, which the Forestry Commission is keen to protect and preserve.
This summer has been an extreme year in terms of precipitation. Compared to previous years, the fens were already much lower or almost dry by this time of year. When the water level is too low in the fens, certain species disappear from the area that we very much want to preserve there. The moment the water in the fens dries up too early in the year, the larvae of the natterjack toad, for instance, die. Special flora such as the round sundew is also in danger of disappearing as summers get warmer and the area dries out earlier and longer.
At various places in the area, ditches will therefore be made shallower, or filled in completely. As a result, the water in the area flows earlier towards the fens, where it is buffered for the drier periods of the year. The effect of these rejuvenation measures is only noticeable within the nature area, and therefore does not cause wet damage to third parties.
Due to these changes, the footpaths will become wetter in some places, making them difficult to walk on. These will therefore be raised so that walking route Mouse and walking route Owl remain accessible to the public. During the work, machines will be in the area, making some paths temporarily inaccessible to walkers. This will be indicated on site.
Thank you for respecting signs and temporary diversions in the area so that the managers can carry out the works smoothly.
