Interview with Klaas Pauly, project leader nature and water

  • Thursday 31 October 2024

Interview: Klaas Pauly about his new role at Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide and the European project for climate-proof water solutions

With the European Horizon Europe PCP-WISE project, Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide focuses on innovative solutions for sustainable water management. Klaas Pauly, in his new role as nature and water project leader, explains how he wants to strengthen the Grenspark against the challenges of climate change.

Welcome to Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide, Klaas! Can you tell us a bit more about your role as project manager nature and water?

"As nature and water project leader, I help to realise the nature objectives laid down in the Master Plan. We do this by working on projects that improve nature conservation and water management in the Grenspark. In doing so, I focus on fostering cooperation and building bridges between all stakeholders, from policymakers to site managers, landowners and farmers, so that we can tackle joint challenges such as drought and climate change."

What appeals most to you in this role?

"It is a very versatile job, but especially being part of a cross-border community committed to nature conservation motivates me enormously. The fact that I can help introduce new technologies and methods in the process is nice because it is what is the common thread of my career. But as a biologist, I think it's brilliant to be able to really make a difference on the ground from this connecting position, for surely one of the largest and most valuable heathlands in Flanders."

One of the big projects you will be working on in the coming years is the European PCP-Wise project. What exactly does this entail?

"The PCP-WISE project focuses on developing innovative solutions for water management. These solutions are needed to better cope in the future with the effects of climate change, such as floods and drought, and associated risks such as wildfires. "What makes this project special is that it puts us at the forefront of using advanced satellite technology to map water management in the Grenspark. Within the project, we are thinking together with satellite image providers about specific solutions that really work for our area: what information do we need, do the developed solutions work well in practice to meet our nature goals, and are they affordable?"

How can technologies such as satellites help?

"Satellites collect detailed images several times a week throughout the year that can give us accurate information about water management in the Grenspark and its surroundings. With radar images, this can even be done through the often present cloud cover. This allows us to see at any time where water is retained and where there may be too little moisture, which is important to better cope with droughts. This data allows us to take targeted measures to help better protect the area from extreme weather events, such as modifying watercourses or creating natural buffers where water can infiltrate."

Why is this so important for the Grenspark and for visitors?

"The Grenspark is a beautiful nature reserve with unique biodiversity. Water management here plays a crucial role in preserving unique flora and fauna. If we can manage drought and water management better, we can prevent vulnerable areas from being damaged. For visitors, it means they can continue to enjoy healthy nature, thriving landscapes and accessible paths. For local residents, healthier water management also means greater safety, with less risk of flooding and wildfires."

What is your long-term vision for the Grenspark and the PCP-Wise project?

"In the long term, I see Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide as an example for other nature reserves in Europe. By working with partners from different countries, we can develop solutions that not only work here, but can also support other regions facing similar climate challenges based on our experiences."

When can we expect the first results of the project?

"The project will officially start in January 2025 and run for three years, but in the course of the first year we expect to be able to share some interesting updates already."
