You start this cycle route at the gateway 'Hemelrijk' at VVV De Tasberg in Essen.
De Tasberg is located next to De Kiekenhoeve, a former farm of Tongerlo Abbey, which now serves as a restaurant. Its other neighbour is the Karrenmuseum, where a large collection of carts is on display.
The route provides an ever-changing landscape of forests and farmland. You cycle from the centre of Essen, past the Paters Redemptorists park to Wildert. Beyond the village, you pass the Bakkersmolen, together with the steam museum and the tuffling steam train, in which you can take a ride on Sundays during the summer months, it is definitely worth taking a bike break here. The Verbindingsstraat takes you right through the Kalmthoutse Heide where you can enjoy the beautiful views.
