| Notes | Anyone interested in the geological history of the Kalmthoutse Heide and by extension of Flanders is welcome on this walk. A UNESCO Global Geopark is an area recognised by UNESCO. Its geological heritage, cultural history and nature make the area of international value. There are 169 Geoparks in 44 countries worldwide. The walk covers the geology, landscape, cultural-historical history and nature of the Kalmthoutse Heide, part of the UNESCO Geopark. How did the area originate (we go back as far as 60 million years ago until now)? - What interventions did man make in the Kalmthoutse Heide? - Where did the sand dunes come from? - Where did the high dunes from 100 years ago go? - Which animals live on the Kalmthoutse Heide? - What is the importance of the Kalmthoutse Heide for the climate? What is the specific flora for this area? A very varied walk - a general overview of the Kalmthoutse Heide as part of the Geopark. Bring suitable footwear. The walk lasts up to +/- 12 hours. |
