The cold winter weather has caused temperatures to dip well below zero for several days. This brisk winter will probably attract a lot of skaters to Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. To prevent an overrun in the nature reserve, the municipality of Kalmthout is taking several measures.

"For years, the Putse Moer and the Stappersven have been attractions for everyone who likes to skate," says mayor Lukas Jacobs. "Although the municipality of Kalmthout does not impose a general ban on skating, we still want to avoid too many people descending to the Heide. In that light, we will strictly enforce the corona rules. In addition, we take a few other measures so that everyone can safely enjoy our beautiful nature."
Local police will thus be called in to manage the influx of people. Car traffic at the main entrances will be diverted to Heide station, where ample parking is provided. The police will also keep a close watch at the various entrances to Heide and at the fens themselves, but stewards on the ice will also be deployed to raise awareness. They will appeal to people to respect the distance rules. Team sports such as ice hockey will not be allowed, not even by (family) bubble. Conspiracies also remain prohibited: anyone moving with more than four people will be addressed.
"Currently, the ice is still too thin in several places to skate," the mayor adds. "Today's measurement shows that the ice is currently 6 cm thick. Those who take their chances now therefore risk falling through. From Friday, the ice will probably be 8-10 cm thick and skating will be possible. Counted over the entire area, we have over 15 hectares of ice available. We want people to enjoy that too, provided everyone respects the rules and limits their visits. That way, everyone gets the chance to enjoy and skate to the full. If we notice that too many people are visiting, we will take the necessary measures. Enjoyment is allowed and possible, but safety remains our top priority," said the mayor.
