eDNA screening for the presence of crested newt(Triturus cristatus) in water features of the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide

The presence of crested newts is not so easy to determine through traditional trapping methods. In 2022, we opted to take water samples in 17 ponds at Steertse Heide and Jagersrust, in addition to research with traps. For these pools and fens, an eDNA screening for the presence of the crested newt was conducted via a standardised protocol.
Of the water samples that were examined, crested newt DNA could be detected in 9 samples. This means that the crested newt was present in 9 of the 17 ponds or pools in April 2022. High concentrations were even measured in 2 pools in the Steertse Heide, indicating the presence of a large number of individuals. It is likely that reproduction is taking place in these pools.
