In memoriam: Herman Suykerbuyk, former chairman of Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide

It is with great respect and gratitude that we commemorate the life and efforts of Herman Suykerbuyk, former chairman of Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide.

Since the official start of the Grenspark in 2001, Herman Suykerbuyk has been at the helm as chairman. In that role, he showed exceptional commitment to the area, the people and the cooperation that shape the Grenspark . His presence was almost a matter of course: he attended all meetings of the Special Committee and observed almost every Steering Committee meeting. Such dedication marked his leadership.

During its ten-year presidency, the Grenspark went through an impressive development. The area almost doubled and the park became an example of successful cross-border cooperation. The expansion of the Grenspark at the end of 2011 was the crowning glory of his work. From both a Benelux and European perspective, this was an important milestone - an achievement made possible in part by his administrative experience, his political acumen and, above all, his conviction that progress comes from consultation, consensus and cooperation.

But above all, Herman had a genuine love for the landscape and nature in this region. He felt connected to both the Flemish and Dutch border region and knew how to bring people on both sides together around a shared responsibility for this unique area.

After ten full years of exemplary chairmanship, he passed the baton to his successor, Cees van Liere. However, his commitment and vision remain tangible in the Grenspark as we know it today.

On 21 February 2026, we said goodbye to Herman Suykerbuyk. His legacy lives on in the landscape he so cherished and in the cooperation he helped build. We are grateful to him for all he has meant. His commitment, wisdom and dedication will be remembered forever.
