Autumn (holiday): activities and tips for going out!

  • Monday 17 October 2022

Autumn is in full swing. The forests are full of autumn colours, mushrooms and wildlife. Time to go out together and admire nature during this colourful season. Therefore, we share some tips and activities in and around the Grenspark.

Autumn treasure hunt Chestnut Festival in the Arboretum - Kalmthout

The chestnut trees at Arboretum Kalmthout are in the mood for a party and are looking for children to join in. Traverse the garden and follow the giant autumn confetti 's along riddles and chestnut games. Along the way, learn about wild and domestic chestnuts from around the world. Put on your step shoes or rain boots, play music for the trees and make it a merry autumn party together with Bolster-Barbie and Chestnut-Ken! Are you done tracking? Then there's definitely time for a drink in the cafeteria, where you also get to fold Japanese origami figures with autumn leaves. Yay!

  • ideal for children between 4 and 12 years

The Happy Bee Trail - Kalmthout

Looking for a fun activity in nature for the whole family? In the Withoefse heath you can go on a treasure hunt with Billie the wild bee. The Happy Bee Trail starts from the entrance gate De Vroente. But if you come by train, you can walk from Heide station to Withoefse Heide and start your treasure hunt there. You have the choice of following the route in two ways: with a booklet or digitally. You can pick up the booklet at Visit Kalmthout during opening hours. There is also a digital version, same route, different direction, different questions. You can find it in the app izi.traveler. Handy is then to put the app on your smartphone at home and download the route in advance.

Tip for the digital treasure hunt: download the app in advance and make sure your battery (and that of your smartphone) is charged.

Do you feel like doing something fun with the family? Use your imagination and surprise us with what you "learned". Create a work of art, you decide which materials you use and what you make: after all, you are the artist. Send a photo of your artwork to billiedebij@gmail.com and who knows, you might win one of the fun bee baskets that will be raffled off every month until 15 November.

  • until Sunday 13 November
  • ideal for children between 6 and 12 years
  • free via digital app or paper version (available from Visit Kalmthout)

Mammoth hiking trail - Volksabdij Ossendrecht

Have you checked out the Mammoth walking trail yet? This route takes you past various landscapes of the Meiduinen area (managed by Natuurmonumenten) in Ossendrecht. Pass sandy plains, fens, woods and heathland and discover the steep edge, where the history of the West Brabant landscape is literally under your feet. Excavations of the former brickworks bring to the surface remains from as many as 2 million years ago. You can do this short (2.2 km) walk after walking route Kikker ( 6.3 km). Start at Volksabdij - Abdijbossen and follow the signs Kikker and Mammoet.

At Brasserie Abdijbos you can enjoy a well-earned hot chocolate with whipped cream.
At entrance gate Volksabdij you can also have rental bikes delivered by FunforFamily.

Mick wants to know what wanders through his forest at dusk and at night. With a real "caught on camera" expedition, we will give Mick and you an insight into the Natuurmonumenten area at night! And we will also teach you how to hang them. Of course, we'll watch the footage in our OERRR cinema. What will we catch; deer, martens, squirrels or rats? We'll get cosy with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Really chill!!!
