
Sunday 27 October 2024 marks the International Day of Silence. According to annual custom, Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide invites you to experience this day in a unique way. As an officially recognised 3-star silence area, the Grenspark is one of the few places in Flanders and the Netherlands where you can enjoy a low-noise environment. Together with various partners, the park organises four silence experiences that let you experience the power of silence in the landscape.
Saturday 26 October: meditative walk in silence
Start your silence weekend with a silence walk in the Monastery Garden of the former convent of the Redemptorist Fathers in Essen. Discover the peace of the orchard, vegetable garden and picturesque pond and enjoy a meditative journey for the senses. Interested? Click here for info and registration.

Landscape painting workshop
During this workshop, you will learn about the history of landscape painters and get an introduction to landscape drawing and painting. Along the way, nature guide Hans Geldhof will tell you about the 19th-century artists who found their way to this peace and quiet area thanks to the newly constructed railway line. Afterwards, get inspired by the landscape during a drawing workshop, led by experienced artists from painting association Vriendenkring 't Palet. Click here for info and registration.
Silence experience from the highest platform of the fire and lookout tower
Experience the vast silence from the highest platform of the fire and lookout tower. At the bottom of the tower, fire watchers and foresters from the Agency for Nature and Forests will tell you about fire prevention and how they silently watch over the vast heathland. After this introduction, you will have the chance to visit the fire watchman's station at a height of 30 metres, a place not normally open to the public. Don't want to miss this unique experience? Silent walk for families
For families with children, a special interactive walk has been organised by De Vroente, Duurzaam Educatiepunt. During this playful walk, young and old will learn about the importance of silence in nature. Do-activities and fun facts about sound and silence make the walk an educational adventure. End the experience with a climb to the highest platform of the observation tower for a breathtaking view. Click here for info and registration.
