Hiking trail Mammoet takes you along various landscapes of nature reserve Meiduinen in Ossendrecht. Meiduinen, part of the cross-border partner network Geopark Schelde Delta, harbours a rich history under its landscape. Thanks to excavations of the former quarry Groeve Boudewijn, remains from as many as 2 million years ago are coming to the surface. To tell hikers more about this fascinating landscape, Natuurmonumenten has developed a walking podcast with forester Miranda Fieret.

The walking podcast takes listeners on a voyage of discovery through the area, revealing special facts about nature and history. At the excavation wall, Kees Kasse, Associate Professor at the VU University of Amsterdam, explains in the podcast why this place is so special. In an additional podcast, you can listen to a 'mini-lecture' with Kees Kasse about the ancient layers of earth that were exposed for a long time as an earth monument. You can also listen to recordings of a borehole in the ground, with clay from as many as 2 million years ago coming to the surface.
Forester Miranda Fieret of Natuurmonumenten shares enthusiastically: "The open heathland is developing rapidly. Ideal for plants and animals that occur naturally here. We have reused some relics from the time of the Quarry. For instance, old stones from the former limestone factory are now a nice warm-up spot for lizards. You can also walk up the excavation wall for a great view and the wall is better protected thanks to a wooden fence."
The Meiduinen forms a valuable part of the Geopark Schelde Delta, a cross-border area with geologically unique landscapes. The Geopark is currently awaiting Unesco status, which recognises the Schelde Delta area as an extraordinary geological heritage. This area includes the Brabantse Wal, the province of Zeeland, the northern part of East and West Flanders and part of the province of Antwerp.
